Come to Your Senses: Writing About the Natural World

Thursday, September 6, 2018, 9 - 12 PM
Writing workshop by award-winning author BK Loren and Naturalist Martin Ogle. The landscape and wildlife of Lafayette is rich and varied--and often goes unnoticed in our hurried lives. Take a morning to slow down and come back to your senses (sight, hearing, touch, taste, smell) through observing the natural world in your own backyard. Part of the joy of observing nature and wildlife lies in being able to gain enough clarity to describe not only what you have seen, but how it made you feel, how it momentarily transformed you. Come to this workshop prepared to observe, learn, explore, and write (a lot), and have fun. Since the human body is part of the natural world, Loren may also toss in a bit of brain science about the benefits of writing and being in nature. Co-sponsored by Lafayette Cultural Arts Commission and Lafayette Open Space. Pre-registration required.

Lafayette Lantern Walk

Flight at Night Lantern Walk

Saturday, September 22, 2018 6:30-8:30 PM
A magical and unique event for the whole family. Celebrate the Fall Equinox and the coming of darkness with a Lantern Walk around Waneka Lake along with an exciting schedule of other night time activities. People of all ages can enjoy storytelling, stargazing, learning about nighttime bird migration and much more. The featured activity will be a walk around the lake with homemade lanterns made from local, recyclable materials including willow canes from Lafayette Open Space properties. Two lantern-making workshops – one for families at the Lafayette Rec Center, and one for adults at The Collective - will be held in advance of the September 22 event. This event is suitable for all ages and will also feature an array of fine door prizes. The event is co-sponsored by Lafayette Open Space and the Lafayette Cultural Arts Commission. Meet at the Waneka Lake Boathouse. For more information, please contact Martin Ogle.
