Moments in Mexican American History in the Southwest

Moments in Mexican American History in the Southwest, an historical look into Mexican-American history, from the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo (1848) to the present, is on display at The Collective in Lafayette.  The exhibit of 23 panels combining text and images, was prepared by CU professors, Dr. Arturo Aldama and Marjorie McIntosh. They are part of a traveling exhibit in Boulder County. The exhibit explores issues such as racism and discrimination as well as activism and social justice.
In addition to the historical exhibit, the paintings of Jerry Rael are on display. Denver artist Jerry Rael was born near the Bosque de los Caballos in a small house located in Jaroso, Colorado, about six miles north of the New Mexico state line. His paintings explore and pay homage to his Mestizo heritage, and address such issues as immigration, Standing Rock, and race.  The bright colors and the mixed emotions in Rael's subjects are represented with a quality that suggests ghosts intertwined in a world where one doesn't know which is real or which is fantasy.
The satellite exhibit by the Lafayette Historical Society, made possible with the help of Frank Archuleta, Jr., features some of the Latino families who have contributed to Lafayette as veterans, leaders, athletes, activists, and coal miners.  The exhibit gives a small glimpse into the impact and history that Latino families have made in the community.
The exhibit will be on display until Sunday, August 27.

Church of the arts

Artist Space Available

Lafayette's Church of the Arts has an opening! Space available is in the basement and measures about 10'x16' with high ceilings and has a north facing window.
Church of the Arts is an eclectic group of artists anchored by artisan hand dyed yarn by MJ Yarns. Nearly every indoor discipline is covered, from painting to pottery, weaving to multi-media mashups. We're a quite and comfortable space for people to work. Some of us are professional. Some of us claim the studio as a sacred place away from the world to follow our hearts.
We're renting studios, not apartments so sleeping here is prohibited. We're not fancy! This is a basic place to make, not an art gallery. We're an indoor art space. Things like welding or wood working would be great but probably wouldn't fit. We're an art space. These spaces WON'T WORK as massage studios, therapy offices, etc. Contact Jonathan Berner for more information

Arturo Garcia

Arturo Garcia at pARTiculars

pARTiculars Guest Artist in August is activist, writer and painter Arturo Garcia. Jaliscan émigré Arturo's technique of painting with palette knives, along with his love for color, results in an exciting combination of the abstract and the figurative. His work harkens back to that of the Huichol Indians of Mexico and the colors he remembers seeing as a boy – ultramarines, violets and magentas.
Arturo also partners with the Boulder-based Americas Latino Eco Festival as a steward of Graficomovil, Mexican artist Artemio Rodríguez’s mini-museum and community printmaking studio on wheels, and his paintings are in galleries in the Denver area as well as in Mexico. His style is classified by art scholars as Figurativismo Fauvista Moderno, Modern Fauvist Representational Art, although Arturo, being self-taught, prefers to just call it modern art. His exhibit at pARTiculars will run through August 31.
