Project Amigo at the Lafayette Senior Center

Since May, members of the Lafayette Whatevers Group have been donating 30 to 90 minutes of their time each week at the Senior Center to offer their skills for Project Amigo.  The Lafayette Whatevers Group members lovingly knit or crochet 6-inch squares that are then shipped to rural western Mexico. Over 600 squares have been shipped to date to help mothers of Project Amigo scholarship recipients contribute to the financial well-being of their families.  These mothers create beautiful afghans from the knitted squares and earn approximately $14 for each work of art.

Project Amigo supports students from Colima, Mexico so that they can create their own educational opportunities and better their quality of life. This non-profit organization assists by removing financial barriers to education through scholarships that include school fees, transportation, uniforms and school supplies, and a hot lunch.

You can help the efforts of the Lafayette Whatevers Group by dropping off yarn donations to the Lafayette Senior Center. The group meets every Wednesday from 9-10:30am and welcomes community members to join in the fun.
