[ARCHIVED] Update on Republic bulk pick-up delays

We have been made aware of the substantial delays in some waste collection by Republic Services. City staff met with Republic Services management and was assured they intend to be fully caught up this week. Two additional trucks have been sent to Lafayette and the Regional Route Supervisor will remain in the city for the remainder of the week to oversee operations.

Republic Services experienced some significant staff changes in recent weeks and the executive in charge of the transition was out on an emergency leave. Republic Services points this out not as an excuse, but to indicate the situation is temporary. They understand service standards must improve quickly and will remedy the situation. The company will also work with City staff to minimize the risks of delays in the future. Though the current delays resulted primarily from staff transitions, and Republic Services fully accepts responsibility, the delays were magnified by the placement of hazardous materials in both trash carts and bulk pick-up piles. Please note that improper disposal of hazardous materials endangers public safety, pollutes our city, and causes further service delays.

Delays are always inconvenient, but Republic Services customers are strongly encouraged to sign up for service notifications at www.republicservices.com under My Account in order to receive notice if a service impact is anticipated. Phone numbers and e-mail are not shared with any other party and are used only to notify customers of potential delays. Additionally, from this point forward all notifications of delays will also be sent to the City’s Sustainability Coordinator, who oversees the Republic Services contract.
