Matthew Hoffman Exhibition & Residency at The Collective


The Collective Community Art Center is proud to present wanderingthroughwords – Works of Matthew Hoffman from December 18, 2018 – February 17, 2019. Matthew Hoffman is a Chicago based artist and designer. Known internationally for his project, “You Are Beautiful”, Matthew Hoffman creates inspirational and uplifting, word-based artwork. His messages are both positive and simple, yet beautifully crafted.

Exhibition: wanderingthroughwords: works by Matthew Hoffman December 18, 2018 – February 17, 2019 A multi-faceted exhibit, which will highlight the impact of words as art.

Artist Reception, with Matthew Hoffman: Friday, January 11, 2019, 6pm – 9pm. Meet Matthew Hoffman, see the exhibit and enjoy light snacks.  Wine available for purchase. 

Community Conversation: January 12, 2019, 1pm – 3pm  With Matthew Hoffman, Arts and Cultural Resources Director Susan Booker and exhibition curator Mark Moffett, Director and Co-creator of The(Work)Collective. .  The Conversation will be a starting point for Matthew to design a site-specific public art installation with will be installed in Lafayette in spring of 2019. Matthew Hoffman is the Custodian of You Are Beautiful, a project to better the world in little ways.  Started in 2002, the You are Beautiful project encourages people to spread a positive message to others by sharing small “You are Beautiful” stickers with another person.  The message has reached every corner of the globe, with over 4 million stickers shared by the community. The mission of this exhibit and the corresponding events is to promote the idea of uplifting and positive messaging for the community.

His public art works have been exhibited in Chicago, Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway Conservancy, Albright Knox Gallery, as well as companies like Apple, Facebook, Zappos, & Cards Against Humanity. His ideas and work have been included in Good, the New York Times Magazine, and Ready Made. He has been published in books by Gestalten, Droog, and Taschen, and was featured in a segment on the Oprah network.

Matthew will design a large scale public art installation for Lafayette.  The sculpture will be installed at a yet to be determined location in May 2019.  There will be another public art reception at that time.

The Collective Community Arts Center is located in the rebuilt historic building at 201 N. Public Road.  The Collective Gallery is open Tuesdays - Thursdays 10:00 am – 5:00 pm; Fridays 10:00 am – 7:00 pm and Saturdays 10:00 am – 5:00 pm; Sundays 12:00 pm – 5:00 pm.
