Business Resources
Whether you are opening a new business or operating an existing business in the City of Lafayette, you may need information from more than one city department. Those departments include the City Clerk, the Community Development Department, and the Finance Department. For more information about specific questions, the list below may be helpful.

Building Improvements
If you are planning on building a new structure or doing significant remodeling to an existing structure, you need to consult the Building Division of the Community Development Department. This process may include a building permit application, and/or Site Plan Architectural Review Application Form. For more information, call 303-665-5588 x1270.

Home Occupations
If your business is a home based one, refer to the city's home occupation regulations.

Liquor License
If you plan to sell alcohol, you must first apply for a liquor license. Liquor license application packets are available in the City Clerk’s office at City Hall and online. For more information, call 303-665-5588 x1222.

Sales & Use Tax License 
The City of Lafayette requires all permanent and temporary signs to be permitted before installation.

Special Licensing 

Special Use Review
If your selected location does not have the zoning required for your type of business, the city's Planning Division will discuss with you the possibilities and procedures for obtaining a special use review. If special review for use is allowed by the zoning category for the location you want, then the special use review application form and a hearing are required, as well as an application fee. 

Temporary Outdoor Sales, Storage, or Display of Merchandise

Urban Renewal Authority
If your business location is within one of the city’s urban renewal areas, you must complete a LURA architectural review application for any exterior changes or modification to property. Approval by the Lafayette Urban Renewal Authority must be obtained before any work begins. 

Zoning Regulations
Ensure that the location has the appropriate zoning for your type of business. The City of Lafayette Planning Division will advise you regarding the zoning regulations for your particular business.

Lafayette Chamber of Commerce
The Lafayette Chamber of Commerce provides membership information and referrals, suggestions on how to introduce your business to the community, and ideas on how to grow with Lafayette. The Chamber produces a yearly “Business Directory and Community Guide,” its website, and a monthly newsletter, which includes information regarding Chamber events and programs.

Lafayette-Louisville Downtown Revitalization (LLDR)

LLDR offers a full range of financing options and operates much like a commercial lender but with some very important differences. The primary interest of LLDR is in encouraging new investment in downtown areas. Revitalization efforts range from renovating a deteriorating building to expanding a business. Highest priority is given to exterior renovation. Loans are not for capital or inventory purposes.

Boulder County Public Health
If you are remodeling for a restaurant, you will need contact the Boulder County Public Health Department. Call 303-441-1564 for more information.

Lafayette Public Library
The Lafayette Public Library provides a number of resources that may be helpful to businesses, including subscription databases that provide access to business news and job search help. 

Boulder Small Business Development Center Network (SBDC)
A division of the state Office of Economic Development and International Trade, SBDC provides free business consulting and low-cost training to new and existing businesses in Colorado. The Boulder SBDC office is located at the Boulder Chamber of Commerce Office, 2440 Pearl Street, Boulder, CO. Businesses may go to any SBDC location throughout the state for business development assistance.
