By offering several programs and participating in a number of unique projects, the Parks, Open Space, and Golf Department is able to provide distinctive outdoor recreation experiences.

Landmark Tree Program

Any person who owns property in Lafayette may apply to the city forester in order to designate a tree on that property as a landmark tree.In order for the city forester to designate a tree as a landmark tree, the tree must meet one of the following criteria:
  • The city forester must determine that the tree is rare or is associated with an historical event.
  • The tree must be at least 30 years old.
  • The tree must have a circumference of 10 feet or more when measured three feet above its base.

If you would like to designate one of your trees as a landmark tree, please complete our online application form.

Memorial Bench Program
The Parks and Open Space divisions are proud to offer a Memorial Bench Program which is available for those who would like the opportunity to recognize a loved one, a special event, or an organization that has made a difference in the community.

People may participate in the program by making a donation of $1,000 (or $750 for a backless bench) to cover the cost of the bench, bronze plaque and installation by City staff.
Benches are ‘cedar’ colored, six-feet wide, and are a high quality, durable DuMor recycled plastic product.  At the donor’s request, the 2”x10” zinc plaques can be personalized with a message of 50 characters or less.

Parks and Open Space staff has pre-determined appropriate locations for memorial benches along trails.
Benches will be ordered upon verification of payment and will be installed by City staff as weather permits.

Zinc plaques are 2”x10”.  Their placement on benches will be determined on an individual basis.  All wording submitted for plaques is subject to the approval of Parks and Open Space staff.

Please complete our online form if you wish to make a donation to the Memorial Bench Program.
