Magical, Miraculous Milkweed

Wednesday, April 18, 2018

In addition to hosting more than 100 million breeding monarch butterflies, milkweed supports a dizzying array of insect life. Yet milkweeds are among the most toxic plants growing in our area. How did these plants evolve to ward off excessive consumption while becoming a keystone species for maintaining populations of prairie insects? Join Steve Jones for a discussion and close-up images that highlight the beauty of these relationships. Steve Jones has authored many publications, including: The Last Prairie, a Sandhills Journal, The Shortgrass Prairie, the Peterson Field Guide to the North American Prairie, Colorado Nature Almanac, Wild Boulder County, and Butterflies of the Colorado Front Range. Steve taught in Boulder Valley School District for 33 years, and he is a past president of both the Boulder County Audubon Society and Boulder County Nature Association.
