  1. Sugar Skull Decorating Workshop

    October 21, 2017, 11:30 AM - 1:00 PM @ The Collective - Community Arts Center

    In this 90 minute workshop, you will receive a short lecture on the customs of Dia de los Muertos and the symbolism of the sugar skull. You will also have the opportunity to decorate a sugar skull with colorful royal icing, feathers, foil, sequins and more. Everyone will leave with a completed skull they have decorated. Instructor: Lupe Cruz and Laura Pereya 25 students per workshop per day. Sign up over the phone 303-661-1261 or in person at 201 N. Public Road. Most workshops for ages 2nd grade and up; younger sibling may attend with parent present.

  2. Day of the Dead Poetry Workshop

    In this 60 minute workshop you receive a brief lesson about el Día de los Muertos and then will explore a few styles of poetry, including simple free verse to describe/remember a lost friend, family member or pet and traditional satirical “Calavera” poems for older writers.     In this 60 minute workshop you will receive a short lecture on the tradition of La Catrina (“skeleton woman”), a cultural symbol of death common throughout Mexican art, especially around el Dia de los muertos, first represented by José Guadalupe Posada and later by Diego Rivera among others.     Lafayette City Council created the Human Rights Commission (HRC) in 2016. The HRC is committed to evaluating Lafayette City government, programs and processes with an inclusive lens, with a goal of fostering equity, social justice and freedom from fear of persecution based on race, religious belief, country of origin, sexual or gender identity, physical ability or age. The group meets monthly in order to: ? Make recommendations to City Council on ways to improve inclusivity and diversity in the City of Lafayette ? Facilitate community conversations on issues and/or occurrences of division and conflict in the City of Lafayette, and to make recommendations for ways to resolve and eliminate these ? Research, study and make recommendations to City Council and staff regarding federal, state or local government actions that may have an effect on diversity and inclusiveness in the City of Lafayette.

    The Lafayette Police Department participates in the national drug take back events each year, which focuses on removing potentially dangerous controlled substances from our medicine cabinets. A national take back day provides the public an opportunity to surrender expired, unwanted or unused pharmaceutical controlled substances & other medication to law enforcement officers for destruction. Items which cannot be accepted for take back programs are used or unprotected syringes, thermometers, oxygen containers, used inhalers, aerosol cans, liquids containing hydrogen peroxide, chemotherapy or radioactive substances and illicit drugs. The shred event provides the public an opportunity to safely get rid of documents and possibly avoid identity theft. Please limit to no more than 3 bags or boxes. Items which cannot be accepted are newspapers, phone books, junk mail, magazines or catalogues.

    The Citizens' Police Academy is a unique 12 week mini-police academy for citizens 15 and older. The academy meets once a week to explain and demonstrate many of the department's policies, divisions and functions. Areas covered include DUI investigation, crime scene investigation, felony car stops, traffic enforcement, tactics, SWAT, officer safety and more! If you have ever wondered why the police do what they do to keep you safe, apply to attend the 2017 academy! Applications and background checks are required.     The Lafayette Police Department's Santa Cop program coordinates gift donations for families in need in our community. The program relies largely on donations. If you would like to help support this program, the police department accepts and appreciates new toy (appropriate for 2-15 years of age) and monetary donations. Donations are accepted at the police department year round, but additional toy collection sites will be around town in November. Monetary donations (cash, check or credit card) can be accepted at the police department, municipal court and City Hall. Thank you if you can help support this much needed program!
